Biographical note for James Laurel Simpson

James Laurel Simpson, (1892-1943) born in Tuscola, Illinois. He did some homesteading in Montana, but ended up in Havana, North Dakota where he ran the local newspaper. There he met Tulla Ruh Holmes (1894-1948) who he would eventually marry.

James was living in Havana,North Dakota when he enlisted in the Army in August 1917. A bunch of men from the same area enlisted at the same time. They were sent to Camp Cody, New Mexico. James sailed for England in December 1917, from there he was in France in January 1918 with the 4th Infantry Division. In March 1918 he was at the front when the war ended November 1918. He returned to the United States in March 1919; he and Tulla were married in November 1919.
